TAKE ACTION

Through mentoring, anyone can contribute to making a difference in the life of a child. It takes funding, volunteers, expertise and leadership to be able to provide high-quality mentoring to children.

Advocate for Mentoring

One way you can help is to be a grassroots advocate for mentoring. MENTOR advocates for public policy and funding that benefits the entire mentoring community. We regularly visit Capitol Hill to help members of Congress understand the value of mentoring and what it will take to close the mentoring gap – the millions of children waiting for a caring adult.

But, we can't advocate successfully without you. Legislators listen to the views of their constituents; it means you have the power to influence the outcome of legislation, simply by communicating your views to your legislators. Whether you are

  • a mentor;
  • a mentoring program staff member;
  • a parent, teacher, or community leader who has witnessed the power of mentoring;
  • a young person who has benefited from a mentor's guidance;
  • or simply an individual who cares about making sure young people have mentors;

You have the ability to help MENTOR enact public policies and gain federal funding that can bring mentoring to more young people. In this section, learn more about public policy issues facing mentoring and contact your members of Congress. And, join the Advocacy Network to receive email updates on mentoring issues.

Leaders for Mentoring

Professional leaders also play a critical and much-needed role in mentoring. Whether you are

  • a corporate executive who wants to sponsor a program;
  • a foundation executive who can establish quality standards and provide critical funding; or
  • a public official who can push for mentor friendly policies and funding;

You have a unique opportunity to bring the power of mentoring to children in your community, state and across the country. Please read more in this section on how businesses, funding sources, and policymakers can play a key role in helping to ensure that mentoring works for all young Americans.
